A Church Sanctuary, Brought Back to Life

We recently finished a sanctuary refresh.

Here's how it went: what we walked into, what made it tricky, and how it turned out.

After: brighter walls, same warm wood ceiling

What Church Spaces Are Up Against

Tall ceilings and open beams

This room has vaulted wood ceilings and big arched beams. That's beautiful to look at. It's also a lot of edges to protect and a lot of height to work at. One drip on that wood and you've got a stain that won't come out.

Old brick that's thirsty

Brick soaks up paint unevenly. If you skip the cleaning and the right primer, you get blotchy color and peeling within a few years. Here's the honest truth: most of the work on brick happens before the first coat goes on.

A schedule that can't move

Sunday is Sunday. Add in weddings, funerals, and midweek groups, and you can't just shut the doors for two weeks. The job has to fit around the church, not the other way around.

Lighting that shows everything

Those uplights wash right across the walls and ceiling. Any roller marks or uneven coverage stand out the moment they're switched on.

What We Did

Protecting the wood: Before anything else, we masked every beam edge and ceiling line where it met the brick. The wood stayed untouched.

Cleaning the brick: We cleaned the walls to pull off years of dust and grime. Paint won't stick to dirt, no matter how good the product is.

Priming: Old brick is porous, so it gets a masonry primer first. That seals the surface so the finish coat goes on even instead of soaking in blotchy.

The finish: Then comes the color coat. The result is a soft, white-washed look that brightens the room but still lets the brick texture show through.

Working around services: A church can't close its doors for weeks. On a job like this, the schedule gets built around the church calendar, not ours. The goal is simple: the room is ready every time people walk in.

The Result

The room feels bigger and brighter now.

The white brick bounces the light around, and the warm wood ceiling pops against it instead of getting lost.

When the uplights come on, you see clean, even color from the floor to the beams.
